Xhosa pride meets contemporary elegance with Laduma Ngxokolo’s range of Mohair blankets designed for Hinterveld.
South African fashion and globally appraised knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo has collaborated with Hinterveld, a company dedicated to weaving Mohair, to design a range of blankets expressing the designer’s heritage and the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.
The collaboration with Laduma Ngxokolo was born out of a Xhosa tradition – much like Ngxokolo’s MaXhosa knitwear range, says Jackie Gant of Hinterveld.
The collection ranges from the corn blankets of the Sotho, to the burnt orange blankets of the Xhosa and the colourful throws of the Ndebele. Representing many African cultures, the collection highlights the importance and deep-rooted essence of blankets and throws in the African culture.
The MaXhosa range is available in natural tones of earthy browns to rich blues extracting the beauty in the South African landscape, and vibrant cameos of colour telling the story of the Xhosa culture and its people.
Made from 70% Mohair, 24% wool and six percent nylon, the range is spun and woven in Uitenhage, South Africa and brings a luxurious element into any living room, office or bedroom.
Everything from the design to manufacturing was done in the Eastern Cape. I worked on the design here and the manufacturing was at Hinterveld in Uitenhage, says Ngxokolo.
MaXhosa was displayed at the 2013 Design Indaba Expo.
