Meltdown

Working in collaboration with materials, Tom Price presents a series of chairs made by melting everyday plastic products and moulding them into a seat.

Artist and designer Tom Price presents his US solo exhibition Meltdown at the Industry Gallery in Washington DC from 10 September to 22 October 2011.

Known for his work in modern furniture products, sculpture and lighting deign, much of Price’s work is characterised by his use of unconventional materials.

Price often creates new tools and techniques to achieve a desired effect. This material process is one that Price considers to be part of the overall narrative of his designs. He says: “I like to think of myself as working in collaboration with materials, processes and phenomena and that the final physical outcome is a product of mutual consent.”

One of the key features of the exhibition will be the Meltdown Chairs, Price’s series of unique seating designs. The Meltdown Chairs are made by melting a seat shape into a sculpted arrangement of everyday plastic products, with a specifically designed heater.

Price will also be exhibiting a series of sculptures made of plastic tubing that takes its cue from the trees and blossoms of Washington DC.
