Jusi flavours

Posted on November 7th 2011

Stefan Sagmeister, Jonathan Barnbrook, William Kentridge and David Goldblatt are some of the artists whose work features in the i-Jusi Portfolio Number 2.

The i-Jusi Portfolio Number 2 presents the work of leading South African artists and photographers, together with the creative work of two world-renowned graphic designers.

i-Jusi Portfolio Number 2 follows on the success of  i-Jusi Portfolio Number 1, which was published in 2010 to ensure the survival of the experimental graphics magazine i-Jusi, in collaboration with the Rooke Gallery

The works in the second portfolio explore the concepts around lettering and typography, looking particularly at the image in the context of the “African experience”.

Roger Ballen, Jonathan Barnbrook, Willem Boshoff, David Goldblatt, Warwick Kay, William Kentridge, Michael MacGarry, Sne Mtetwa, Stefan Sagmeister and Guy Tillim are the artists featured in the portfolio. Each of the 10 works were signed by the artists and produced in a limited edition of 50.

All lithographs in the portfolio are 325 x 500mm printed on 250g Rives BFK. The printing process used is offset lithography using UV stable inks. The portfolio boxes are hand made and covered with Egyptian linen book cloth.

Preparation of the images for printing was overseen by Professor Stephen Inggs of the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town.

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister formed the New York based Sagmeister Inc in 1993 and has since designed for clients as diverse as the Rolling Stones, HBO, and the Guggenheim Museum. Having been nominated five times for the Grammies he finally won one for the Talking Heads boxed set.

Jonathan Barnbrook

Jonathan Barnbrook's fonts Exocet (1991) and Mason (1992) are regarded as benchmarks of the pre-millennial style. Barnbrook's talents, however, extend beyond typography, his layered graphic style having given form and meaning to the artist Damien Hirst's print monographs.
