With the advent of modern biotechnology, nature has become an object of design. Pharmland is a proposal by Nord Architects to redirect 20% of Denmark’s agricultural land to grow medicine instead of food. Denmark is widely regarded for its agricultural aptitude, however Pharmland predicts that to maintain economic competitiveness, crops need to be diversified to include genetically engineered plants with pharmaceutical and functional properties. Examples include mine sweeping plants, tomatoes with diarrhoea vaccine and biologically produced plastic from crop fields.
