Fighting for freedom

Posted on July 8th 2010

Inspired by the South African Freedom Charter, Faith47's latest body of socially conscious work explores forms of discrimination.

Faith47’s new collection of work, with a short film by Rowan Pybus, was inspired by the Freedom Charter and explores the social and economic injustices that plague South Africa.

The Freedom Charter and its commitment to a non-racial South Africa has acted as the backbone to a long and painful struggle to change the political and economic situation in the country, Faith47 explains. It lists the demands and desires of the people, focusing particularly on democracy, human rights, land reform and labour rights.

Sixteen years into democracy however it is becoming increasingly evident that some of these changes have only been made on a superficial level, or not at all. Faith47 believes that it’s time to reassess the aims of the Freedom Charter and try do them justice.

A selection of the pieces seen in the video were shown at MU Space in Holland and at Focus10 in Switzerland recently.

Cape Town-based graffiti artist Faith47 searches for a tone of ink that goes directly to the heart. Her work is a fixation, merging the intimately fragile and most subtle gestures with a raw and violent darkness.
