South African Design Afrika participated in the new Inspiration series for the Conran Shop with Xhosa gourd baskets.

The Conran Shop’s new Inspiration series asked designers from across the world to reinterpret Sir Terence Conran’s book. From South Africa, Design Afrika participated through these Xhosa gourd baskets. Professor Pedro, a sculptor from Zimbabwe, made the wire frames that were then bussed from Cape Town to the Masizame Women’s Project in the Eastern Cape. Somewhat battered on arrival, the kinks in the frames were not straightened out before the weavers set to work, giving each basket an unusual shape and texture.
