Cultural Emergency in Conflict and Disaster is a new handbook arguing for culture as a fundamental factor in rebuilding and reconstructing societies affected by conflict and disaster.

Published by Prince Claus Fund and NAi Publishers, Cultural Emergency was designed by Irma Boom and edited by Berma Klein Goldewijk, Georg Frerks and Els van der Plas.

The guiding principle in Cultural Emergency is that culture is a basic need and as such, combines theoretical approaches, case studies and practice-based examples that illustrate the role culture can play in tackling issues resulting from disaster and conflict.

Interspersed with photo essays, the book also looks at international legal questions, political dimensions and socio-cultural perspectives relating to culture, conflict and disaster.
