Posted on February 1st 2009

What do 5.5’s Clean, IDEO’s Aqueduct Concept Bicycle, Kenya Hara’s Designing Design book and the 10x10 Project all have in common?

What do Shepard Fairey’s Obama Poster, Vogue’s Black Issue, 5.5 designers’s Clean, IDEO’s Aqueduct Concept Bicycle, Kenya Hara’s Designing Design book and Design Indaba’s 10x10 Low-cost Housing Project all have in common? They are all on the (longish) shortlist of 70 designs up for the Brit Insurance Design Awards.

Billed as the world’s most comprehensive design awards, the second annual Brit Insurance Design Awards recognises seven industries: architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport. Finalists in each category are to be announced at the end of February. These finalists will go forward to vie for the 2009 Brit Insurance Design of the Year, to be revealed on 18 March.

Although the judging is to be chaired by Alan Yentob, and the panel includes designer and environmentalist Karen Blincoe and architect Peter Cook, this year public participation is also being encouraged. A People’s Choice Vote and blog for the general public to express their views can be found at www.designsoftheyear.com.

The Brit Insurance Designs of the Year are on show at the Design Museum in London  from 12 February  to 14 June. The award ceremony takes place on 18 March. Website: www.designmuseum.org.

5.5 designers

Since 2003, 5.5 designers have established an enviable reputation, being awarded the Grand Prix de la Création by the Paris City Council after just three years of business. Far from focusing only on shaping objects, 5.5 designers enforce a conceptual rigour that sees them permanently question their design status.

Kenya Hara

Kenya Hara's design work is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, as demonstrated by the programmes he designed for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games.

Bill Moggridge

Bill Moggridge is a cofounder of IDEO, a firm that helps companies innovate through the design of products, services, environments and digital experiences. IDEO has offices in Palo Alto, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New York, London, Munich and Shanghai.
