Although Hot Afro might look like photographs composed by an extreme décor stylist inside of a glossy magazine at first, all of the interiors photographed are real homes belonging to real South Africans. Photographer Craig Fraser has uniquely slipped into the private living space of some of South Africa’s most creative individuals – the likes of product designer Haldane Martin; fashion designer Marianne Fassler; jewellery designer Geraldine Fenn; sculptor Francois van Reenen; international buyer Trevyn McGowan; and ceramic artist Barbara Jackson. These are interiors that are globally savvy but distinctly South African – spaces that epitomise the country’s passionate energy, vibrancy and soul. Distinctively, all the interiors show elements of recycled and repurposed materials, natural light and surroundings, a heightened sense of heritage and a divine cultural soup.
