Food goes pop

Here today, gone tomorrow... A selection of popular pop-up restaurants will be putting in an appearance on the Design Indaba Expo floor.

Here’s a quick look at the pop-ups that will be, um, popping up at Design Indaba Expo from Friday 1 March to Sunday 3 March 2013.

Beijing Opera is a small dim sum pop-up restaurant with a weekly presence at Side Street Studio in Woodstock. Owner Yang Zhao has participated in Jade De Waal's Foodjams and the Spier Secret Food & Wine Festival.

Ma Mere Maison is a French-style confectioner, whipping up hand-crafted treats from its shop in Salt River. Its signature salted macadamia nougat and red velvet cake pops have gained owners Lexi Bechet and Di Spicer a cult following.

Queen of Tarts serves an enormous repertoire of cakes and tarts from its shop in Observatory. Owner Tina Bester has written four best-selling cookbooks, Bake, Comfort, Fun in the Kitchen and Celebrate with the fifth one, Jampacked, about to be published.

The Creamery makes really-truly-made-from-scratch ice cream with seasonal ingredients sourced only from local family farms. Flavours are imaginative and delectable, from peanut butter to roasted apple and ginger.

*A contingent of Food Trucks will also be parking on the Expo floor. Read more about their stop.
