Who's afraid?

Vampires in the desert and sightings of Kurt Cobain in the Karoo? Could it be? Who's afraid? Van Coke Kartel's latest graphic novel investigates.

Imagine meeting the ghost of Kurt Cobain in a bar in the Karoo. You think it’s as unlikely as turning into a vampire?

Think again! Afrikaans rockers Van Coke Kartel’s new four-part graphic novel series Wie’s Bang considers exactly what happens in deserted bars in the middle of the desert.

The Wie’s Bang (translated as “who’s afraid?) graphic novel series was launched as part of the campaign to promote Van Coke Kartel’s new album of the same name, which is being released this month.

In the novel Cobain tells Van Coke Kartel that they need to produce their greatest album yet before the end of the year, as this would be the only way for them to recapture their souls.

Wie’s Bang is the brainchild of WonderMutt art director Marais Janse van Rensburg, while Griffin and Blink Stefanus from Watkykjy.co.za wrote the comic book series. Anja Venter is responsible for the illustrations in this fourth novel.

Van Coke Kartel’s first three graphic novels can be downloaded for free at www.watkykjy.co.za.
