Topiary Lamps by Vera & Kyte

This high-impact light by the Norwegian duo rethinks the traditional lampshade.

Like giant pastel-coloured lollipops, Vera & Kyte's Topiary lamps look like they came straight out of a children's storybook. But their oversized round shapes are more functional than fantastical.

Instead of a traditional lampshade, the Topiary lamp shields the bulb behind a giant disc that rotates to allow for either direct or indirect light.

The clean-cut, precise shape of the reflectors floating above a slender base gives the lamp a papery, almost two-dimensional character.

Norgewian design studio Vera & Kyte are designers Vera Kleppe and Åshild Kyte.

They launched the lamps earlier this year at Salone del Mobile in Milan and are showcased them at the 2014 London Design Festival as part of 100% Norway at TENT London

“Our design studio is always seeking new impressions, eager to discover the trigger for our next idea,” say the designers. “This curious approach leads us to constantly explore new materials and aesthetics in all our projects.”

The lamp comes in three different heights and is made of lacquered steel finished in pale blue or mint green.

“When placed together they create a poetic landscape of light reflecting upon our perception of depth and space,” the designers explain.
