Sweet Kills: A designer’s impression of the dangers of diabetes

Nattakong Jaengsem’s Sweet Kills campaign takes a gory look at the dangers of sweet treats.

Sugary treats are notoriously difficult to turn down despite the adverse effects they have on our health. In an attempt to get through to the masses, The Diabetes Association of Thailand commissioned Thai designer Nattakong Jaengsem to create a campaign scary enough to ward people off the good stuff.

A poor diet, lack of exercise, and genetic vulnerability coupled with a high sugar intake can result in diabetes, a lifelong disease that affects the way the human body handles sugar. Wounds that won't heal are a symptom of type 2 diabetes and can lead to infections and even amputations. To bring this to the fore, Jaengsem designed a series of images that show sugar’s effect on the body with startling clarity.
