Deriving its name from the Afrikaans word meaning “sweet biscuit”, Sootcookie Ceramics was started by Tanya Laing, a graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art. Sootcookie designs offer a quirky new take on ordinary objects, like the paper plates and cups of local braai culture. Themes in Sootcookie’s designs often play on the contrast between traditional and more contemporary ceramics, moving away from mass production to focus on the more bespoke.
