The Stringbike, using strings instead of cables, makes for a surprisingly smooth ride.

Cycling without a chain sounds like it could be similar to flying without wings. It’s not though, the Stringbike simply replaces the traditional chain of the bicycle with strings.

Hugarian designers have created the Stringbike, a bicycle that uses cables to enable pedalling. The Stringbike looks like any other bicycle except for the series of cables that replace the standard chain. These cables, connected to the pedal, spin the rear wheel hub forward.

The system is however rather complicated. The cables allow the pedals to swing back freely while the wheel continues to spin, even though its not being spun further. Similar to a chain system, the cables can use adjustable gears. Maybe stick to the old chain system for now…
