Woolworths and Safmarine recently joined forces to task learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 in the Western Cape to transform a retired shipping container into a classroom for learners in disadvantaged communities.
The brief required the learners to transform the containers in such a way that it would be able to safely and comfortably hold 25 pupils. It was also emphasised that the container classroom had to form a sustainable part of the school’s ecosystem.
The Vissershok Primary School outside Durbanville in the Western Cape received the revamped container based on a design by Mashaarn Brink, a learner at Stellenberg High School.
Having taken its place at Vissershok Primary, the container will serve as a much-needed classroom for Grade R learners in the morning. The rest of the school will be able to use the facility as a reading room for the rest of the day.
