The Populus hotel in Denver, designed by Studio Gang, stands out for its eco-conscious design and distinctive façade inspired by aspen trees, a recognizable emblem of Colorado, a state with the highest concentration of aspen trees in North America. This 13-story building is the first carbon-positive hotel in the U.S. Populus aims to redefine downtown Denver’s architectural and environmental landscape.
Populus’ unique window design takes inspiration from the distinctive “eye” markings of Aspen trees, with extended frames that shade interiors and direct rainwater. The triangular building, utilizing a concrete mix with reduced cement, maximizes downtown density and skips dedicated parking to promote eco-friendly transportation. A green roof attracts local wildlife, merging sustainability with urban living and offering a model of eco-conscious architecture in Denver’s core.
The window designs are a prominent feature of the design’s façade as well as interior functionality. Populus’ aspen inspired façade is uniquely integrated with the hotel’s layout. Each vertical contour corresponds to guest rooms, with varying window sizes and shapes to reflect the nature of public and private spaces. The base features large, portal-like windows, framing the lobby and restaurant, while upper-floor guest rooms offer panoramic views of Denver landmarks. Windows in these rooms provide cozy seating areas, immersing guests in the surroundings and drawing them closer to the natural beauty outside.
As the U.S’s first carbon positive hotel, the Populus project saw over 70 000 trees planted to offset its carbon footprint. Populus aims to blend high design with sustainability, offering a unique, eco-friendly experience.
