Japanese design studio Nendo, in collaboration with French architecture firm AREP and the SNCF, has released a redesign for France's TGV inOui high-speed train. The redesign includes the exterior and interior of the train, described by as ‘Nose-to-seat’ makeover.
For the project, the design team drew inspiration from the novelty of the mode of transport, "The train is unlike any other mode of transport, moving through the landscape much like a flowing river," the design team explained.
In the exterior design, The sense of fluidity begins at the front of the train, where a streamlined, aerodynamic nose enhances energy efficiency. A bright white exterior was chosen to reflect heat which is complemented by a black ellipse to highlight its contours, adding a distinctive detail that, according to the designers, gives the train an "almost animal-like appearance.
The interior design reflects a seamless horizon line; "The colour scheme mirrors the skyline—darker at the base and lighter above, with accents of sparkling yellow," the design team shared. "The overall effect is soft, serene, and enveloping, complemented by vibrant, playful details." In keeping with France’s tricolour flag, the interior palette incorporates the red, white, and blue.
The interior design focuses on enhancing passenger comfort and optimizing space within the train carriages. Nendo's design introduces innovative seating arrangements that allow for increased personal space and improved accessibility. The seats are designed to be both functional and aesthetic incorporating ergonomic features and high-quality materials. Additionally, the design includes adaptable lighting systems that adjust to the time of day, creating a more pleasant travel environment. Design with longevity and sustainability in mind, the TGV’s interior features durable materials that are easy to clean and replace, with 97 percent of the materials being recyclable.
