Spanish architectural studio Temperaturas Extremas has designed an innovative eco-friendly water tower within a protected forest near Luxembourg City. The design combines the infrastructure of water tower with wildlife conservation. The project titled, the Bird and Mammal Shelter and Water Reservoir, is located in a nature reserve and supports local biodiversity while storing 1,000 cubic meters of water.
The structure consists of two cylindrical towers, each with distinct materials and functions. The first tower holds 600 cubic meters of water, features a rough concrete exterior and is designed to host swallow nests. The second tower holds 400 cubic meters, is insulated with cork and features wood slats which are designed to encourage plant growth. and allowing the tower to blend into the forest like a tree.
Designed aesthetically and functionally blend into the natural surroundings, the towerincludes strategic nesting areas for birds and bats, a rainwater collection system, and an observation deck for monitoring wildlife. To ensure the project enhances local biodiversity, Temperaturas Extremas collaborated with local ornithologists to design the nesting areas.
The Bird and Mammal Shelter and Water Reservoir brings together conservation and ecology to municipal architecture.
