Murmuring Minds

DRIFT explores movement, process, and human-machine interaction with new installation

"Murmuring Minds" is an innovative interactive performance installation that explores the intricate patterns governing movement and process within a dynamic space. Created by DRIFT, the installation features sixty autonomously-moving rectangular blocks that behave like a swarm, each executing specific actions based on coded behaviours. As participants engage with the blocks, their movements and decisions visibly affect the installation, highlighting the relationship between human agency and machine response.

Throughout the performance, audience members observe a fascinating interplay between participants and the swarm of blocks, illustrating how each situation requires a unique approach. The blocks respond collectively or individually, creating a shifting landscape of events that challenge the conventional boundaries between observation and participation.

Inspired by the swarming behaviours of birds, fish, and bees, "Murmuring Minds" transforms the space into a realm of sociability, study, and play. The installation serves as both an experiment and a question: How do we generate choices?
