Moulded with clay

Maarten Baas has designed a modular chandelier for Lasvit using his unique signature style of clay moulding.

From the Series

Maarten Baas turns to clay once more with the design of a unique chandelier for renowned lighting manufacturer Lasvit.

The product designer is renowned for designing creations using synthetic clay, which is hand moulded around a metal frame. His latest creation, Das Pop makes use of his signature design style and looks towards classic, recognisable shapes that moreover reveals a modern and almost comic twist.

Das Pop is based on Baas’s Clay Furniture collection conceived in 2006, which drove him to international recognition. His fingerprints, still visible due to hand covering the furniture pieces, made each object a truly unique piece.

The collaboration between Baas and Lasvit results in a product that blends two crafts: the classic hand blown glass by the lighting company and the clay-covered arms by the Netherlands-based designer. The chandelier emphasises random shapes and illustrates the personal and non-industrial feel of a product. Its modular components create an opportunity to create variations within the fixed structure.

Das Pop was unveiled during the 2014 Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy.
