From the Series
Monica Kim Garza, who works as both a ceramicist and painter, attempts to create pieces that celebrate the healthy female body. Painting and sculpting women (primarily in the nude), Garza places her luscious models in contemporary situations: on motorbikes, surfboards and sitting in bed looking at their cellphones. Using bold and vibrant sketches the half Korean, half Mexican-American artist draws influence from hiphop music and strong female artists such as Frida Kahlo and Selena.
Garza’s paintings beautifully and gently negotiate the tricky territory surrounding indelicate depictions of women in the nude to yield strong and powerful representations.
