The modern pantsula

South African photographer Kgomotso Neto Tleane unveils new work.

Last year we featured the Honey, a collaboration between artist Rendani Nemakhavhani and photographer Kgomotso Neto Tleane. The latest offering from Tleane is a look into a modern version of South Africa’s amapantsula. Titled New Age Pantsula, Tleane collaborated with The Beanz RSA trio, which consists of Jabulani Skosana, Prince Modutoane and Simon Makhoba, to create this modern take on a retro style. The bucket hat, rolled up trousers and Converse sneakers are the signature pieces for the pantsula.

Pantsula is a highly energetic dance form that originated in the black townships of South Africa during apartheid. It became a form of social commentary for black South Africans and has undergone several transformations.
