The Cape Craft & Design Institute’s (CCDI) annual Handmade Collection will present some 47 objects created by designers of the Western Cape at Design Indaba Expo between 25 and 27 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The final selection was made from 215 entries, the criteria for selection being an object that would demonstrate the relevance, creativity and collectibility of handmade products.

Featuring the work of both established and upcoming crafters, some of the designs to look forward to include Amy Rusch’s crown made of wire, cotton thread and recycled magazines paper, and Jane Solomon’s seat that’s been upholstered in a new fabric inspired by indigenous birds.

Upcycling and repurposing were popular themes with a large bottle cap basket by Phanny Mangwiro and a cupboard made from antique wooden printer trays by Katie Thompson of Recreate. There is also Willard Musarurwa’s large wirework chair, maple and rosewood candlesticks by Bert Parker, and a merino wool and mohair handbag by Bridget Henderson, among other interesting creations.

“As this exhibition encourages producers and designer makers to push their creative boundaries, new marketable products often flow from this event,” says Majorie Naidoo, the CCDI’s communications manager.

The Handmade Collection, now in its third year, is the premier showcase of the CCDI, a Section 21 company set up 10 years ago by the Western Cape Province and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology to promote and grow the craft and design sector.
