Lofty aims

The design of a new loft in downtown Manhattan explores the interaction between gallery and living space.

It’s probably many an art lover’s dream to live in a space reminiscent of a gallery, with all their favourite things on display. UNStudio has made this possible for one of their clients with the Collector's Loft.

UNStudio recently completed the design for an existing loft in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, in which the living areas can be likened to exhibition spaces.

The loft owner is a keen collector and wanted his living space to accommodate his collection of art and books. With its long and wide spaces, the existing loft space presented challenging proportions. Gently flowing curved walls were introduced to virtually divide the main space into proportionally balanced spaces.

Flexibility is one of the loft’s key features. Most of the rooms are modular and interchangeable so that the area devoted to living and the areas devoted to collection can be effortlessly merged.

Despite the number of collections in the loft, the space remains light and open. The lighting in the loft has been specifically designed with the ability to create different atmospheres at different times of the day.
