While most of the art world was taking note of the 54th Venice Biennale, some 8 000 kilometres away another exhibition was celebrating the works of Italian-South African artists.
In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification, a joint exhibition of Italian-South African artists Lorenzo Nassimbeni, Severa Rech Cassarino and Marco Cianfanelli, marks the occasion. Taking place at the Pretoria Art Museum and running until 14 August 2011, the exhibition is part of a larger project initiated by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Activities and Heritage in realising a project by the acclaimed critic, Vittorio Sgarbi.
Nassimbeni explains that the project saw 219 artists of Italian origin, from five continents, exhibit their work in various art venues around the world. These exhibitions all converged in a multimedia installation at the “Padiglione Italia” on 4 June 2011 at the opening of the Venice Biennale. The inauguration of the joint exhibition in Pretoria is a manifestation of the artists’ multimedia participation at the Venice Biennale.
