Apparently geniuses thrive on clutter. And the not-so-genius spend their lives trying to organise and manage their clutter. German designer Stephan Schulz has come up with a prototype design that could help to do this. The Comfy Cargo Chair won’t keep the clutter bug away but it might just help to reign it in a little bit.
The Comfy Cargo Chair spawned from the idea to create a piece of furniture which does not predetermine the surface for the user. Basically comprising a steel frame that represents the outline of a chair, the Comfy Cargo Chair relies on the creative collaboration of the user to give it its unique look.
Rigid, three-dimensional and somewhat cold, the chair consists simply of hollow spaces which need to be filled by the user. The nature of the fillings depend entirely on the user, Schulz suggests everything from pillows to newspapers, books, plants and firewood. Or a colourful array of the more general household clutter.
It may be called the “Comfy” Cargo Chair but the comfort factor of this seat is questionable, depending on what the user decides to do with it.
Some 53 metres of rounded steel make up this chair with 66 curved elements that weight about 21kg. Schulz says: “The complex design is the result of a period of digital drafting and production technology. This process, along with the CNC controlled bending of the metal curvature, made the efficient production of such a seemingly complex structure possible.”
