Parley for the Oceans and Sky High Farm Universe have collaborated with material innovators Bananatex, TômTex, Ponda and Nature Coatings to create a collection of everyday wearable garments for the Parley ‘Future Material’ project.
Parley for the Oceans, a nonprofit environmental organisation that focuses on protection of the oceans, is renowned for its Parley Ocean Plastic, a range of premium materials made from intercepted and upcycled marine plastic debris that can replace ‘virgin plastic’. Now Parley is expanding its material revolution with the ‘Future Material' project which introduces natural materials, biofabrication and green chemistry as alternatives to conventional and often harmful material standards.
Unveiled at the Future Fabrics Expo 2024 – the largest dedicated showcase for sourcing certified, sustainably and responsibly produced materials – the new collection from Parley and Sky High Farm Universe (a fashion brand dedicated to food security) features five clothing items such as jackets and trousers made using Parley Ocean Plastic and other biomaterials created by Bananatex, TômTex, Ponda and Nature Coating.
Bananatex is the world’s first durable, technical, biodegradable and plastic-free fabric made purely from the naturally grown Abacá banana plants, while TômTex’s Series M, from the pioneer material science company that creates innovative, eco-friendly textiles from waste, is made from mushroom chitosan. Ponda’s BioPuff material, which insulates a puffer jacket in the collection, is made from bulrushes that grow on regenerated wetlands.
Nature Coatings transforms wood waste into high-performing black pigment that is free of carcinogens like benzene and is a direct replacement for petroleum-derived carbon black. Its black pigment was used to dye all the textiles used in the Parley x Sky High Farm Universe capsule collection.
‘Utilising Parley's revolutionary network of material innovators, this collaboration with a best-in-class partner delivers eco-innovative and creative solutions to the ready to wear space and more broadly, to audiences around the world,’ said Daphne Deybold, co-CEO and CMO of Sky High Farm Universe.
