With a natural inclination towards organic materials, Lucas R Adams has established himself as a designer with a sustainable ethos.
Adams is the founder of Kraftisan, a Cape Town-based product design and manufacturing brand that aims to create functional and user-friendly products to enhance everyday life. Krafitsan, taking its name from traditional methods of manufacture, combines an artisanal design process with the modern revelation of industrial machinery. From paper, wood and all “breathing” materials, Adams ensures all products are handmade and designed to limit waste. With the materials used and the design process followed, Adams stays true to the mission statement of Krafitsan – organic and sustainable design.
This year Adams has worked with a number of new clients including Bacardi and B-Guided South Africa. For Bacardi, Adams designed a chalkboard revealing the rugged and tough characteristic of the brand. The “Bacardi Oakheart Chalkboard” can be used as a stand-alone item or wall-mounted brand display.
Adams worked closely with B-Guided South Africa to design a pin-up board that allows the sharing of information around the city. The board will be put up in local Cape Town coffee shops and seeks to encourage people to add to it whenever they feel inspired.
Lucas R Adams was part of the Emerging Creatives programme at Design Indaba Expo in 2012 and has since been hard at work realising his dream and establishing Kraftisan.
The event was really inspiring and proved to be a brilliant testing ground for my products, which received great attention, says Adams.
In January 2013 Adams hopes to establish his first studio space for Kraftisan from where all products will be manufactured and sold directly to the public.
