Serbian architecture and design firm Salt & Water have designed a floating urban greenhouse that not only caters for sustainable living but can be used as a learning centre and community hub. Dubbed Eco Barge, the multifunctional urban centre would come equipped with a greenhouse that generates clean energy and organic produce.

According to the firm’s website, the conceptual floating structure was designed to serve as an eco-friendly hub for the citizens of Belgrade. Floating on the Danube River, the barge houses a greenhouse with vertical gardens on one end and a small building in the other. Solar panels and wind turbines generate sustainable energy and a water irrigation system keeps the plants alive using recycled water.

“In addition, this is supposed to be a place for different kinds of presentations and workshops where everything can be learned first-hand,” wrote the studio. “The biggest challenge of the project was to create a functional and aesthetically compelling area with limited funds available.”
