European city

Bjarke Ingels' "Europacity" will provide the Île-de-France community with a commercial and cultural hotspot.

Blending culture, retail and leisure, BIG Architects will design a new urban destination in France’s Île-de-France region.

Bjarke Ingels of BIG Architects will work alongside a group of prominent architects to design an eighty-hectare cultural and commercial centre.

Drawing on the theme of European urban experience, diversity and culture, BIG proposes to create a space for neighbouring regions to come together in a commercial and cultural hotspot. Europacity will comprise recreational areas, hiking paths and urban farming areas.

Europacity will be an experimental hybrid between urbanism and landscape design: centre and periphery overlapped in the simultaneous coexistence of a recreational open landscape of rolling hills superimposed on an urban neighbourhood of walkable streets, plazas and parks, say Ingels.

With a strong focus on sustainability, Europacity will utilise green-tech implementations that not only save energy but also improve the quality of the urban environment and community.
