Comic relief

Sometimes South Africans need to sit back and have a good ol' laugh at themselves. The group exhibition Foul! helps the laughing along.

Foul! is a tongue-in-cheek look at what it means to be South African. Featuring cartoonists, satirists and visual artists at the Artspace Gallery in Joburg until 19 June 2010, Foul! highlights the importance of satire as a powerful tool for social commentary.

Participating artists include Rico Schacherl, Stephen Francis of Madam & Eve fame, Tim Mostert, City Press cartoonist Alastair Findlay and fine artist Craig Smith.

In a country as diverse as South Africa, laughing at ourselves is as important as talking to each other. Satire plays a key role in concientising people around issues of politics, current affairs and the state of the nation.
