Chain-delier

Industrial chic meets Victorian-era grace in these awe-inspiring chandeliers, made with recycled bicycle parts.

Mexican artist Carolina Fontoura Alzaga uses recycled bicycle parts, mostly the chains, to create beautiful chandeliers in different shapes and sizes.

Her "Connect" series of sculptures takes its inspiration from Victorian chandeliers, bicycle culture and the use of “un-artistic” materials.

Connect address issue of class codes, power dynamics, reclaiming potential and ecological responsibility, says Fontoura Alzaga in her artist’s statement. “In this series the traditional chandelier is seen as a bourgeois commodity and the bicycle parts as a symbol for self-propelled movement. These subversive objects challenge the aesthetics of wealth by visually contrasting the classic elegance of the candelabrum with the newfound elegance of discarded, mechanical bicycle parts.”
