A Capsule in Time

A Capsule in Time by Marina Tabassum

Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum has been selected to design the 2025 Serpentine Pavilion in London. Her proposal, titled "A Capsule in Time," delves into themes of temporality and architectural legacy.

Tabassum, who was named as one of ‘The 100 Most Influential People of 2024 by Time Magazine’ is renowned for her  sustainable, socially engaged and context-sensitive designs that focus on resolving the challenges faced by marginalized communities in her home country,  aims to explore the concept of time through this pavilion.

The pavilion’s is inspired by traditional South Asian Shamiyana tents and aims to create a versatile space. These tents are historically used for outdoor gatherings and celebrations, with a kinetic nature that allows them to adapt to different needs. Tabassum’s Pavilion embraces this openness, fostering unity among visitors through conversations, live programmes, and public events. The design consists of four wooden capsule like structures with a translucent façade, creating a play of light and shadow. The pavilion's design will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Serpentine, featuring essays and a conversation between Tabassum and Serpentine's Artistic Director.

The Pavilion will open to the public on June 6th, 2025,
