Bowl table lamp by New Works

The latest light by the Copenhagen design studio is a modern-day take on a portable lantern.

Copenhagen-based brand New Works has designed a table light whose overall form as an “art object” puts a twist on its clean Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic.

New Works’ creative director Knut Bendik Humlevik designed the Bowl table lamp as part of the brand’s Objects of Copenhagen collection. Humlevik used honest, raw materials to create a lamp that is both artistic and functional. “We want to use the energy that occurs when art and design meet to create products that dare to challenge our proud and streamlined Scandinavian heritage,” he explains.

The Bowl table lamp takes its inspiration from an old-fashioned lantern. Humlevik’s modern version melds two contrasting materials – copper and glass – in a simple, bowl-like shape that, while understated, draws attention to itself. “The product is heavily influenced by our experiments with natural and geometric forms, giving it a nice sculptural touch,” he says.

The lamp will be on display at the Casa dell’Opera Nazionale Balilla as part of designjunction’s participation at Milan Design Week 2015.
