Drawing on the colours and shape of an apple, the 2013 NYC BigApps competition’s new identity and graphics provide a colourful backdrop for its fourth annual awards ceremony.

The competition name plays on “Big Apple”, the playful nickname for New York, and the identity, designed by Michael Bierut and Jesse Reed of Pentagram, reveals the form and colour of an apple, as well as a pie chart. Data sets used in the competition inspired the designers to create a limited-edition silkscreen poster for the event.

To consolidate BigApps’ status, and to underline the essential nature of digital thinkers to the city’s economy, Pentagram created a symbol that marries the world of data analysis with the familiar iconography of New York City: Big Data meets the Big Apple, says Bierut.

The duo also designed the ceremony programme and certificates for the winning teams following the same motif.

The NYC BigApps 2013 competition supports new, exciting and innovative apps. Winning teams share $150 000 in cash prizes and receive support in launching their apps.
