MBOISA: A coat that brings tradition to a contemporary form

Thabo Makhetha's contemporary Starburst Coat is made from a Basotho blanket, combining tradition and modernity in a unique way.

South African designer Thabo Makhetha is best know for her Kobo collection: a range of capes and jackets made from traditional Basotho blankets. It is one of these jackets that has been nominated for Design Indaba’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) 2016.

Nominator Emilie Gambade, editor-in-chief of ELLE South Africa, says that the Starburst Coat has the right kind of alchemy to be an object of exquisite beauty.

“It is uniquely African; combines heritage, craft and beautiful proportions; it is timeless, colourful and says a lot about who we are and where we are from but at the same time it is exceptionally modern and very contemporary,” says Gambade.

Makhetha explains that the coat is given its name for the way it is created from a series of panels that come outwards in a star shape.
