Focus On: Cuba

As the communist island's relationship with the United States thaws and the respective embassies reopen, we focus on Cuban art, creativity and design.

In 1959 Fidel Castro took over the leadership of the Caribbean island of Cuba and the country became a communist state. A year later the United States imposed strict embargoes that halted trade between the two states, until the “Cuban Thaw” this year. In the decades in between, Cubans have had poor access to the Internet, an unreliable supply of oil, no new cars and heavily censored media. These conditions often lead to resourceful design and exciting, undiscovered creativity.

We've focused on medical innovation, underground art scenes, reimagined classics and innovative design solutions. Bien!
