Design Indaba Expo has established itself as the foremost showcase of South African creativity, with 379 exhibitors and some 38 000 visitors. This year’s event, which took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 25 to 27 February 2011, proved yet again to be so much more than a trade fair. Design Indaba Expo is a multi-platform festival of creativity.

Complementing the main Expo was a chock-a-block daily programme of activities for everybody. All-day fashion shows presented the creations of some of the hottest designers on the scene while a short film festival took viewers on a delightful journey of escapism. The Design Indaba Kids workshops saw, among others, Zapiro and Heath Nash showing the designers of tomorrow how to draw a striking cartoon or create something from other people’s rubbish. Pecha Kucha presentations by leading creatives gave visitors something to chew on while the Grolsch bar ensured that everybody stayed refreshed. Visitors also enjoyed a delicious, high-quality food market experience with the Earth Fair Market on the Expo floor.

One of the key attractions at Design Indaba Expo, the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa award went to Woza Moya for their Dreams for Africa chair. The Most Creative Stand award, as selected by Richard Hart, went to Emerging Creative Ian Kelynack’s Isle of Trees exhibit.

More than beautiful designs and inspiring experiences, Design Indaba also contributed some R261 million to the GDP, up from R232 million in 2010 and R191 million in 2009, as calculated in an economic contribution report compiled by the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town. The bulk of this number was made up of business orders to the value of R141 million, up from R123 million in 2010.

With its long-standing support of South Africa’s design industry, Woolworths keeps the spotlight on the potential of design.

As enriching education is part of its sustainability programme, known as the Good Business Journey, Woolworths has a particular focus on Design Education. Making the Difference through Design, an initiative of the Woolworths education programme, in partnership with Sappi and Design Indaba, engages Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners in a unique experience of the country’s design community.

Sponsored by Sappi and Woolworths, the annual Making the Difference through Design competition enables aspiring, young designers to go beyond the classroom and showcase their creativity and skills on a national platform.

Learners from more than 400 schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape participated in the 2010 Making the Difference through Design competition. The work of the national winning team will be displayed to the design community by Woolworths at the 2011 Design Indaba Expo.

Pecha Kucha presentations are only 6 minutes 40 seconds long, allowing the presenter to wow the crowd with 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha, which takes its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architects in 2003. What started as a forum for young designers to network and share their creative work with their peers in a public setting, has grown into an event that regularly takes place in more than 100 cities across the world.

Lowery Stokes Sims and Dr Leslie King-Hammond will talk about the Global Africa Project.

Lowery Stokes Sims is the curator of the Museum of Arts and Design and Dr Leslie King-Hammond is a founding member of the Maryland Institute College of Art. They will be presenting on the Global African Project.

The Global Africa Project surveys the rich pool of new talent emerging from the African continent and its influence on artists around the world. Through ceramics, basketry, textiles, jewellery, furniture, and fashion, as well as selective examples of architecture, photography, painting, and sculpture, the exhibition actively challenges conventional notions of a singular African aesthetic or identity, and reflects the integration of African art and design without making the usual distinctions between “professional” and “artisan.”

This event is for Design Indaba Expo exhibitors and VIP buyers only.

Announcement of the winner of the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa award.

Beauty is more than skin deep in this year's Most Beautiful Object in South Africa award, presented by MINI, at the Design Indaba Expo from 25 to 27 February. Turning to the country’s opinion makers, each finalist has been personally nominated and endorsed by a leading local editor, journalist or commentator.

But what is “beauty” and what is the defining characteristic of a “beautiful object”? Does it lie in aesthetic appeal, social significance, sustainability, economic impact, lifestyle relief, entertainment or cultural flavour?

Casting the net open for South Africans themselves to answer this all-important question, the public is invited to vote for the actual winner via SMS. To vote, SMS the code before the nomination to 34180. SMSes cost R2. By correctly voting for the winner, you could win a R10 000 shopping voucher at the Design Indaba Online Shop.

Alison Morris is a trends and events analyst for WGSN-homebuildlife - the ultimate trend forecasting service and product development tool for the global home and interiors industries.

For Design Indaba 2011, Morris will be presenting an inspirational overview of WGSN's creative direction for spring/summer 2012 following three macro trends - cinematic, laboratory, and primal futurism. The talk will focus on the colours, materials and objects that will shape these directions, and will explore how these three themes can be developed into hard and soft product ranges.

This event is for Design Indaba Expo exhibitors and VIP buyers only.
