Doug Pray, Eames Demetrios and Gary Hustwit discussed their notions of filmmaking and their responsibility to document the design industry at the 2010 Design Indaba Conference. This is the first part of a two-part discussion.

In this interview, Demetrios offers constructive advice on how design is in fact a problem-solving device. The real power in design thinking, he says, is the willingness to go on a design journey. In turn, Hustwit explains that the motivation behind Helvetica was a process of surveying and brainstorming solutions through design. Meanwhile, Pray gives philosophical insights into his views on communication and truth through documentary.
