Cape Town's big design caper

South Africa's Design Indaba Expo 2010, staged in February attracted more than 35 000 visitors over three days.

More than 280 visitors came, including 80 newcomers and 40 up-and-coming creatives. It provided a huge opportunity for local designers to introduce themselves to the international practitioners. On offer at the Cape Town International Convention Centre were all-day fashion shows, a short-film festival and children's workshops, while sharing their thoughts in the conference section were more than 40 influential speakers, including Dr J. Craig Venter, Li Edelkoort and Eames Demetrios.

Last but not least, the Cape Town Design Route was launched again following its resounding success last year. The route features 62 Western Cape-based designers and studios. Since it was a joint initiative with Cape Town Tourism, visitors could pick up their Design Route Maps at any of the 18 Visitor Information Centres in the city. This promotion is now a year-round attraction, not just restricted to when the Expo is on. For more information on this vibrant event, please visit www.designindaba.com.
