KARRI is a child-friendly voice messaging device that allows young users to communicate without relying on smartphones or screens, an alternative to early smartphone use. Design by Pentagram and developed in collaboration with technology company, KARRI, the device is aimed at children aged five to thirteen, to offer a safe, independent way to send and receive voice messages between children and parents through a dedicated system.
The device features a compact, pocket-sized form makes the device easy to carry and includes an LED matrix display which provides minimal, non-distracting feedback. The functionality is built around a single, intuitive interaction, a “slide to talk” control that condenses the four core functions of record, listen, send and delete, into one fluid gesture. Referencing walkie-talkies alongside modern voice-note behaviour, the interface allows children to operate the device without instruction-heavy learning curves. Additional features such as GPS tracking, geofencing and multi-channel messaging are carefully integrated to support parental reassurance without overwhelming the child’s experience
Through extensive prototyping and user testing with families, Pentagram refined both form and interaction to prioritise independence, safety and clarity. The result is a considered piece of industrial design that provides an engaging and functional alternative to early smartphone use.
