Pentagram designed, the Silver Linings report turns Raiany Romanni-Klein’s complex longevity research into an interactive digital experience that highlights the possible futures of increased healthspan. Created by Pentagram partner Giorgia Lupi, the project translates hundreds of pages of scientific, economic and demographic research into a data-driven visual narrative. The report sits at the intersection of biotechnology, economics and public policy, examining the potential social and economic implications of extending healthy human life.
Aligned to both Lupi and Pentagram’s approach of treating data as an experience, the Silver Linings report features a specialised horizontal interface, inspired by the linear structure of physical scientific manuals, to guide users through the report while allowing them to progressively explore more detailed information.
At the heart of the project is a refined visual language for data. Consistent scales, typographic hierarchy, restrained colour palettes and modular layouts create a coherent system capable of presenting vastly different datasets. Custom illustrations including adaptations of medical textbook engravings and newly commissioned drawings of organs, cellular mechanisms and interventions add a human and tactile quality to the scientific material. The centrepiece is the Simulation Tool, which allows users to manipulate variables and explore alternative futures. Developed in collaboration with economists, the interactive model demonstrates how factors such as the speed of therapeutic development, changes in fertility and shifts in productivity could influence projected GDP and the number of lives saved.
This interactive approach presents the potential consequences of longevity at both at the scale of individual lives and entire societies in an engaging, interactive and explorative format for users.
