Bound by hand

See an exhibition of books that blur the boundaries between conventional books and visual art.

From the Series

Handbound: a collection of illustrated bookworks is a group exhibition curated by Keith Dietrich and Vulindlela Nyoni on behalf of the Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts (CCIBA) at Stellenbosch University.

The exhibition showcases a collection of handcrafted books that have been illustrated, designed, printed and bound by postgraduate illustration students from the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University.

The books on exhibit range through picture books and children’s books to more conceptually-based artists’ books. These bookworks blur the boundaries between the conventional world of books and the world of visual arts. Here images and texts merge and enrich each another, or interact and clash with one another, leading to a range of new visual possibilities that challenge and celebrate both the conceptual framework in which book art functions, as well as the physical tactility of the books.
