Christophe Guberan: Active materials research

ECAL graduate Christophe Guberant talks about his investigations into the properties of active materials in our exclusive video interview.

Swiss product designer Christophe Guberan splits his time between commercial projects and material research with MIT. Guberan’s work centres around research into active materials: materials that can self transform with energy that comes from water, heat or the sun. His projects, he says, always start with simple and accessible ideas.

“I started to work on architecture, and after that I realised the scale of the building was too big for me,” says Guberan. “I wanted to work close to the material, and close enough to the product that I can work on the real scale and manipulate it [the material] myself.”

Guberan was recently awarded Swiss Design Award 2016 for his material research projects.
