Chasing Sunbeams

UK artist Morag Myerscough unveils a new installation experience

Chasing Sunbeams, Morag Myerscough’s latest large-scale installation, radiates the artist’s unmistakable joy, colourburst, and vibrancy. Serving as the centrepiece of Sunnyside, a new city-wide art experience at Ballarat’s historic Mining Exchange, the installation opened on 6 November 2025.

The installation is sculptural, immersive, and multi-sensory. Its walkways and panels are shaped through Myerscough’s signature overlaid geometry. Sound is embedded in the experience through the contribution of local musician and composer Raul Sanchez i Jorge, who collaborated with community participants to create a shifting soundscape built from field recordings, vocals, and musical tones.

The collective installation experience is rooted in community, created in collaboration with the residents of Ballarat. Residents participated in creative workshops, resulting in their stories and experiences being captured in hand-painted graphics, layered surfaces and bright hues that flood the architecture with energy. Myerscough reflected on working closely with the community noting that the dialogue grounded the installation in “stories of resilience and connection.”

Designed with sustainability in mind, Myerscough used materials that are recyclable or reusable wherever possible. The result is a rich, emotional environment that embraces both place and people celebrating Ballarat’s identity while inviting visitors to imagine, play and connect.

“Sunnyside is a celebration of what makes Ballarat so special: our creativity, our sense of community, and our boldness to embrace new ideas,” said City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves.

Chasing Sunbeams represents Myerscough’s first major Australian project in a regional city. Presented by The Social Crew and backed by the City of Ballarat and Visit Victoria, Sunnyside extends beyond the Mining Exchange. Walks, workshops, and pop-ups spill into laneways and hidden corners, transforming the whole city into part of the artwork.

With Chasing Sunbeams, Myerscough offers a design-led celebration of belonging and colour — a communal bridge between Ballarat’s heritage and its creative future.
