Four inspired talents from Ghana

The country that inspired Fela Kuti to create his Afrobeat sound is producing another wave of edgy creatives from fashion to furniture to music.

M.anifest, hip-hop artist

M.anifest – full name Kwame Amet Tsikata – took home 2013’s “Best Rapper of the Year” accolade at the Ghana Music Awards. He recently released his third studio album, Apae: the Price of Free EP, which he describes as his first album “made in Ghana, inspired by Ghana, and provoked by Ghana”. He has toured with Gorillaz and Blur star Damon Albarn, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Afrobeat co-founder and legendary drummer Tony Allen, as well as soul icon Erykah Badu. Listen to "Someway Bi", a hip-turning melody with a sassy pidgin hook doused with tons of Afrobeat flavour here.

Buki Akib, accessories designer

If Fela Kuti lived in the 21st century and needed the services of his own personal stylist, Accra-based Buki Akib would fit the bill. Her collection of bags, called the Wives Collection, was a runaway hit at cult London concept store Darkroom. The collection combines handwoven Yoruba textiles with leatherwork accents tooled by artisans in South Western Nigeria. Read more about Abib’s lavishly embellished fashion here.

Tekura Design, furniture studio

Established in 2000 by husband-and-wife team Josephine and Kweku Forson, Tekura is a local family business based in Accra. It started out producing traditional handicraft but soon graduated to making contemporary African furniture and décor pieces, such as the Crazy Legs table featured in the “Africa Is Now’ exhibition at Design Indaba Expo 2014. Fashion Rising, fashion brand

Fashion Rising, launched by Studio One Eighty Nine, empowers women by building sustainable fashion and artisanal business in Ghana. It is part of a new wave of ethical fashion brands investing in the African continent and championing indigenous textile crafts.
