The Whispers of Plants

The Electric Plant Co is using technology to better understand and respond to nature.

The Electric Plant Co. has developed a Bud sensor to capture the subtle electrical activity of plants and turn them into actionable insights to help nature thrive. Small probes attached to a plant’s stem capture its electrical activity, which can reveal information about the plant’s hydration, environmental stress and physiological responses. The Bud sensor is paired with Bombadil, the company’s AI model trained to recognise patterns in plant electrophysiology. Bombadil, has been trained on more than four million hours of electrical signals collected from over 1,400 plants spanning 100 species. By analysing these signals, Bombadil estimates seven physiological stress markers, including photosynthetic efficiency and the temperature difference between a plant’s leaves and the surrounding air. allowing growers to gain a more immediate understanding of what is happening inside the plant organism and how it’s responding to its environment. The ambition is to use electrophysiology to empower plant health, helping people understand what living systems need before visible signs of stress appear.

The applications of plant intelligence in nature, could help farmers make more precise decisions about irrigation, identify environmental stress earlier and use water and other resources more efficiently. In urban designer and landscape architecture, plant-sensing technology could inform how cities manage trees, parks, green roofs and other living infrastructure. Data about plant stress could guide maintenance, improve water allocation and help protect urban vegetation against rising temperatures and increasingly unpredictable weather. Healthier urban ecosystems, in turn, can contribute to biodiversity, wellbeing and more liveable public spaces.

As climate change intensifies pressure on food systems, water supplies and natural habitats, understanding how plants respond to their surroundings could help communities make better-informed environmental decisions. Electric Plant Co offers actionable insights to help nature thrive.
