Do you design the artwork or work with a team? How does the design process happen in your studio?

I generally work with a small team, myself and a couple of other designers, to design the artwork. I’ll usually get hands-on during the storyboard process to make keyframes that show the look of the piece, as well as give direction as we figure out concept and aesthetic. As we move into production, I’ll also work with animators, modelers and/or direct a film crew to create the final elements.

How important is the music in terms of brainstorming and designing a title sequence?

The music always saves our butts! Sound generates such an emotional response. You’d be surprised how a good score improves a picture! It’s terrific to be in conversations with the music supervisor or composer and come up with a unified concept. During the design process we usually brainstorm about the music and sound design, and work to tracks we think get the mood and tempo we’re after. Sometimes these songs work so well that they end up being a part of the final mix.

Did you have to study film of some sort in order to do the job you do?

No, but it can’t hurt!

What do you do when the ideas just don't come? A designer's block if you will?

I used to stare at the paper, stare at the screen… But now I usually take a break, get something good to eat, take a walk or a bath, read the newspaper or go out, let everything sleep for a bit and come back to it. I also tend to work on two to four projects at any given time, and inevitably I’ll be able to think of an idea for whatever project I’m not actually sketching for at the moment.
