Shanghai Ring

Kengo Kuma & Associates unveils Shanghai Ring, an ambitious mixed-use development that aims to break the monotony of the high rise skyline in the city.

Japanese architectural studio KKAA (Kengo Kuma & Associates)have completed Shanghai Ring, a mixed-use urban district that reframes density, movement and public space in a city known for its high rise skyline. Located in Shanghai’s Jing’an District, the structure is conceived as a continuous loop of activity, bringing together retail, community spaces,  workspaces and residential housing.

The defining feature is an elevated ring-like form that arches above the city’s existing street grid. Rather than separating functions or isolating programmes in separate towers, the ring integrates circulation paths, plazas and terraces into a fluid loop to encourages physicl and social movement. By elevating the pathways, pedestrians are able to traverse the site at multiple levels, relieving vehicle congestion.

KKAA’s ring design creates flexible floorplans with sweeping curves that can adapt over time, accommodating changing uses without altering the architectural identity. Sunlight and airflow are optimised by the ring’s geometry, which frames views across the city while creating shaded, human-scaled zones below.

Shanghai Ring’s use ofloops instead of isolated blocks, orientates the building towards gentle density and social connectivity – creating an architecturally rich presence within the city’s homogenous skyline.
